Greetings,
Everyone has been so kind with their response to the video from my home this holiday season - I thought I would take a bit of time and share the background on some of my belongings and the decorations . . .
The garland. The garland. Yes, there is 80 feet of garland in the drawing room. And it makes the room totally 'magical' . . . a word that I love to use when describing my house for the holidays. The garland itself is made from fresh magnolia leaves, cedar, douglas fir, eucalyptus, and stripped dogwood branches.
My drawing room also contains a large portion of my artwork. In fact, I've hung most all of my portraiture in the room. A collection of black & white and colour photography, etchings, and oil painting from numerous periods all mix together . . . from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.
My bar - with some vintage Arthur Court Stag Head DOF cocktail glasses . . . and my monogrammed cocktail napkins from SFERRA.
The antique military uniform is a new addition to the house. And I love how well it pairs with the oil portrait on the table behind my sofa. And of course, stacks of art books, and remembrances are everywhere. In fact, the b/w images of the bartender is a picture that I took myself - at the opening party for the San Francisco Polo store in 1996. Several people have inquired about the tartan clock in the drawing room . . . and it's actually a piece from Ralph Lauren from the early 1990's. The china pattern is called "Clarendon" and it also came in chargers and serving pieces.
And we don't need to get too deep into the details of my shoe fetish. Shamefully, this is only a small portion of them . . . lol . . . but, I love the way the colours work with the rug in my bedroom.
If you recall the holiday photo shoot for Rue Magazine last year (you can see a video here) - this is the space that used to be my dining room. Now, after several years as a study or dining room - it's back to serving its original purpose as my bedroom. And, yes, there is something madly magical about sleeping in a room filled with Christmas trees. I highly recommend it.
Since there is so much artwork hanging in other parts of my home - I love the simplicity of just the few pieces that hang in my bedroom. And the 90 odd yards of marine blue taffeta tenting the room create the most wondrous space to sleep in. The leather and tartan headboard is a custom piece that I designed last year.
Opposite the bed, you might recognize the antique chairs upholstered in Diamond and Baratta's "London Plaid" -as they were a big part of the photo shoot at the house last year . . . and now these two chairs rest underneath another of the over-sized theatrical backdrops that I had framed for the house.
And for the tree this year . . . especially after last year's tree had been so bright and metallic . . . I wanted something really organic and natural. So this year's tree is filled with apples, pears, and lemons - with little woodland creatures and bird's nests throughout the branches. I also filled the interior of the tree with dogwood branches, bleached eucalyptus, dried gourd and mushrooms.
A fun little detail from the tree.
If you missed the video that I posted earlier in the week - you can see it here.
Cheers,
Scot

Just wonderful! You've created "The Vagabond's House" from the poem of that title.
How beautiful. And I LOVE the drawing room; the art!
Fabulous fabulous fabulous. Its so refreshing to escape the all white decor and sit in your room and bask in the richness and the warmth. A feast for my eyes.
Merry Christmas
Hey y'all . . . thank you so much. I DO love my little flat - and delight that I can experiment continuously in the space. I'm already plotting some ideas for next year . . . lol.

Scot, your home is absolutely stunning! I am in awe of the all the details and how well they all work together. It feels a bit Southern, English and Ralph Lauren to me! It's so warm and inviting - you did a wonderful job!
Hope to bump into you again one of these days!
Merry Christmas!

What's the story on the equestrian paintings? They are wonderful. Are they mid-19th c.?
I have to say, I am amazed at your ability to effortlessly mix the colorful plaids, the patterns and the tapestry rug and have it all look great!
Totally awe inspiring!! Your home was made for the holidays!
"Home Spectacular Home!! franki
Seriously you could rent out your place at Christmas for a fortune... You coined it, it is magical!!!
It honestly astounds me, I never tire at looking at every detail. You my friend are a genius. My only question is how can you bear to take it all down and where do you store it?
I also love the intimate proportions of your space, it is sooo cozy and inviting... You must look forward to every evening!

Wow, I love your collection of shoes! :) I'm pretty sure those are really comfortable. :)
Fabulous...Fabulous..Fabulous!
Absolutely stunning! My Scottish husband is salivating at the sight of your beautiful rooms.
One question though, where on earth did you find/source those huge theatrical backdrops? Incredible!
Merry Christmas!
What La Dolfina said.....! OMG! I cannot get enough of these rooms!
Merry Christmas, Scot!!!
I utterly adore your home. From the colors to the equestrian art to the xmas trees in the bed room.
I love it all.
May you and your loved ones have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012.
Please speak about the fabulous large size theatrical backdrops in your home...they are too fabulous and where might one obtain one
Now THIS is a home! It just wraps you up in a safe, warm world. I've been missing this. We live in what can be a very cold world as it is. I need that safe haven to come home to. I really don't get the stark institutional look that is so common.
Thank you for sharing. I'll be coming back and looking at these photos many more times.
Merry Christmas and wishes for much happiness in 2012.
Kathy
Your home is indeed quite magical! It's like a beautiful, wonderfully safe cocoon. Do you have high ceilings? What's the secret to making all the patterns work together? Thanks!
I await each of your posts with such anticipation! Love your cozy place and the stories behind the pictures. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and I am already excited to see what the new year brings on your blog. (my pinterest awaits as well)
So cozy and handsome and festive!! Happy Holidays!
Chris,
Unfortunately, it's not like I found the theatrical backdrops at any specific store that's likely to have them again. They were a random find from a small store here in SF. I know that our local opera company (SF Opera) has warehouse sales periodically - check with your local opera house and see if they do the same thing.
Cheers,
Scot
